Road cycling

Estimated population-level acute risk associated with cycling on public roads.

Base risk estimate

0.015 micromorts per miles

Population-level estimate. Not a personal prediction.

Assumptions

Estimates reflect UK population-level cycling risk across all road types (urban and rural) for 2022, applied as a reference estimate for developed-world road cycling.

Limitations

UK-specific data. Cycling risk varies substantially by country, infrastructure quality, helmet use, traffic density, and cycling culture. US cycling conditions differ from the UK.

Source notes

Based on UK DfT Table RAS30001, which reports cyclist fatality rates per billion vehicle miles for 2022. UK data is used as one of the most complete national per-mile cycling exposure datasets available. Approximately 14–16 cyclist fatalities per billion miles.
