Riding a motorcycle

Estimated population-level acute risk associated with motorcycle travel over a given distance in the United States.

Base risk estimate

0.3 micromorts per miles

Population-level estimate. Not a personal prediction.

Assumptions

Assumes population-level average US motorcycle fatality risk across all road types, rider demographics, and conditions for 2022.

Limitations

Motorcycle VMT estimates carry greater uncertainty than passenger car VMT. Risk is strongly affected by helmet use, impairment, speed, road type, rider experience, and visibility. Year-to-year variability exists.

Source notes

Derived from 5,932 motorcycle fatalities in 2022 and approximately 19.8 billion motorcycle vehicle miles traveled (FHWA Highway Statistics 2022). Calculated as approximately 300 fatalities per billion motorcycle miles.
